Circular composting

Welcome to autumn, Peterborough County!

Leaves have started to fall, and that makes this the perfect time to tell you about the role of yard and leaf waste in a circular economy. For those of you in the County with access to leaf and yard waste pickup services, did you know that your leaf waste is composted at the Bensfort Road landfill? And did you know that once the process is complete, Peterborough City and County residents can purchase some of that finished compost material for only 4.5 cents per kilogram? It’s hard to get more circular than the leaves from your own yard getting turned into compost that you can add back into your gardens and lawns! You can learn more about our leaf and yard waste programs and alternatives here.

Proper disposal of yard waste, whether that’s composting it in your own backyard or sending it away to be composted, prevents it from ending up in the landfill itself. Reducing the amount of garbage that ends up in the landfill is one of the major functions of circularity, so anything you can do to prevent waste is a win!
