One of the easiest ways to start building your Emergency Kit is by gathering the important documents and information you already have at home.

    Begin with collecting:
    ✔️ Copies of your ID
✔️ A list of medications and health conditions
    ✔️ Important phone numbers
✔️ Copies of essential documents (e.g., birth certificates, ownership papers)
✔️ Any other information you may need if you had to leave home quickly

Your household emergency plan helps you know who to call, where to go, and what to do before an emergency happens.

Here are some simple actions to get started:
Talk with your household or family

    • Choose a meeting place inside and outside your home
    • Decide who everyone will contact if separated
    • Review how you’ll communicate during an emergency
    • Include your pet emergency plan

If you rely on regular support services

    •  Reach out to your home care, community programs, or mobility support providers
    • Ask what emergency services or backup options are available
    • Make sure you know who to call and what to expect if your routine or services are disrupted

If you’re a parent or caregiver

    • Contact your child’s school or daycare
    • Learn their emergency procedures, reunification plans, and communication methods
    • Add their information to your own emergency plan

    If you take regular medication

    • Call your doctor or talk to a pharmacist
    • Ask how extreme events (heat waves, power outages, winter storms) could affect your medication
    • Find out if there are safe storage alternatives or short-term solutions during emergencies

Building an Emergency Kit might be easier than you think — most of the items are already in your home!

Take a few minutes to look around and gather essentials such as:

    • Your basic first aid kit
    • Flashlights (and extra batteries!)
    • Refillable water containers
    • Canned or non‑perishable food
    • An old backpack, tote, or small bin that can serve as a central spot for supplies

You don’t need to buy everything at once. Many of the items you need are already tucked away in drawers, closets, or the garage. It’s just about bringing them together in one place.

What are some items you already have at home that can be a part of your Emergency Kit?
